Nigerian peaceful presidential vote is an “Example for Africa”


Niger has contested a peaceful presidential vote under the interim military government which has set an example for the rest of Africa.
The army provided assistance to organize the vote, a year back defeating President Mamadou Tandja. The voters had to choose between opposition leaders Mahamadou Issoufou and Mr. Tandja's supporter Seini Oumarou. Mr. Tandja had enjoyed 10 years in power, but was removed from power when he tried to prologe his legal term limit.
It is a great day for me and for all the Nigeriens said General Salou Djibo who has led the junta since its broader popular revolution. He said at the time of casting his vote, if this honorable vote is successful our democratic goal will set an example for the rest of Africa. The voting was took place in a peaceful atmosphere however the turnout appears to be lower as compare to the first round of the vote which held last month.
The election has been evaluated by the 2000 observers from African union, regional economic bloc, ECOWAS, European union and the US group.
Santiago Fisas, chief monitoring of EU said the contesting of election is the victory of Niger’s people those have set an example that how to come again to democracy in peace.
Niger basically a desert nation in West Africa, those have the reserve of uranium has attracted billion of dollars of investment. But historically Niger is the poorest country in the world where the democratic system has been failed and most the government were of the military rulers.
Voter Mariama Maiga, a Nigerien student, told the election would now change country political situation and we expect from the loser for tolerance and the new president should manage a framework to find out the solution of our problems which are mainly unemployment, corruption, inadequate of public funds.
Mr. Issoufou has obtained 36% votes in the first round and he thinks by his confidence that he would be elected in the second round.
