PJ Crowley, the spokesman of US state department has resigned after calling the treatment of the man alleged of seeping out secret wires to Wikileaks “stupid”.
He said that he has taken liability for the affects of his remarks about Bradley Manning. Private Manning is under custody in lonely imprisonment in a highest security US army jail. He has been on tightened observation at the Quantico marine base in Virginia and is manacled at all times. He faces 34 allegations relating to the leaking of 720,000 diplomatic and military secrets.
The resignation of PJ Crowley has been accepted with great regret by Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton. She said he had performed his duties "with dissimilarity", aggravated by a great devotion to public policy and public diplomacy".
Mr. Crowley was speaking to the listeners at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology about new media and foreign policy when he made the disputed remarks. Being ex-employee of US air force Mr. Crowley reportedly said.
"What is occurring to Manning is ludicrous, counterproductive and unintelligent, and I don't think why the Defense department is doing it. However Mr. Manning is in the right direction." He said his remarks were on the record but he later supplementary that they were his personal views.
In his resignation letter he said: "Given the shock of my comments, for which I take full responsibility, I have given my resignation." Firstly his remarks were published in a blog by the BBC Philippa Thomas, who participate the event.
Pesident Barack Obama later emphasized that he had received guarantee that the conditions of Pte. Manning's imprisonment was "suitable".
Earlier this year, Amnesty International has showed great concern over the condition in which Mr. Manning was being arrested. It said he had been detained "for 23 hours a day in a meagerly provided lonely cell and depressed of a pillow, sheets, and personal possessions since July 2010". He was also apparently forced to undress on a daily basis
