A positive change in Haiti - Martelly beats Mirlande Manigat


The first round results of presidential election show that musician Michel "Sweet Micky" Martelly has succeeded the excessive vote on 20 March.
The official quoted through the news agencies, he beat former senator and first lady Mirlande Manigat. Despite spoiled by scam, the polls were conducted in a peaceful atmosphere and the turnover was high.
Haiti is struggling to reconstruct after the January 2010 severe earthquake and to handle with a cholera plague. The final results are not projected until 16 April at the earliest. Mr. Martelly, who has made several promised with the Haitian people for change becomes the president he will have to face some hard challenges.
A large numbers of people of quake victims are still living in dirty tent cities as the cholera eruption, which has killed thousand of people and remains uncontrolled. Mr. Martelly is politically unproven but his communication of restructuring inspired to Haiti's poor and jobless people,
Mr. Martelly got advantage from the help of five candidates which were getting rid of in the first round. Fellow musician Wyclef Jean, whose own standing was ruled unacceptable, also favored Mr Martelly. The run-off vote was theoretically to conduct in January but was overdue.
The Observers said as compare to the first round the second round was much better managed in November, when turnout was remained only on 23%.
Jude Celestin, who had the supporting of outgoing President Rene Preval, was primarily positioned second in the first round but take out from the competition after international observers originate there had been prevalent fraud in his favor.
Two people were killed by gun fire during second-round polls in fighting between competitor political groups in various remote areas. The election authorities expanded the voting time till an hour because some polling stations were missing polls materials. But the head of the commission said there will be not entire impacts of misuses on electoral process.
Preval’s tenure officially would be ended on 7th February but he has obtained parliamentary endorsement to stay in office till 14th May 2011.
